Last week, I invested in a body brush for the first time after reading in Beach Bum Beauty’s Blog that daily body brushing is an important part of the new ‘Operation Fit and Fabulous’ programme she has devised.
I’d never paid much attention to body brushing before but upon reading about its benefits, and after already coming to the conclusion that I want to take care of myself a little more, I headed straight for The Body Shop (other stockists are available!) and bagged myself one of these little wonder brushes.
But, why are body brushes so wonderful? Well, the skin is an organ of elimination, like the liver and kidneys, and according to skincare specialists, it discharges more than a pound of waste products every day, so by giving it some extra help, you can increase the chances of this process being more effective. Brushing improves blood circulation and the immune system, and also improves the appearance of your skin, leaving it softer and smoother. Another BIG bonus for us girls is that by concentrating on hips and thighs, you can improve the appearance of cellulite and dimpled skin.
My new brush has been sat on my bedside table unused for the past week since I would only remember that I needed to use it before I showered when I was actually in the shower – duh! So last night, determined not to let it become another ornament – looked at but never touched – I grabbed the body brush and did as I had been instructed by the enthusiastic lady in the shop. I began at my feet, working my way up my body as I brushed in circular motions towards the heart. There was an awkward moment when I asked my boyfriend to “brush my back” and he looked at me gone out, but thankfully he obliged.
Afterwards, I felt a warm, tingly feeling, particularly on my back, which is the area that usually gets neglected the most since I’m not a contortionist. I was left feeling incredibly invigorated and relaxed at the same time and as a result, I’m determined to build this into my daily routine.
You are advised to use your body brush every day on dry skin before you shower. You can wash the brush every couple of weeks or so, before leaving the bristles to dry naturally.
Would you judge me if I admitted that I cannot wait for tonight’s body brushing session?!
